US Antarctic Philatelic Program

Please follow these instructions and suggestions carefully:

  • No more than two covers, per person, per station, per year.

  • Covers will be processed for personal (that is, non-commercial) use of individuals only.

  • U.S. correspondents use domestic first-class postage for the APO addresses (see below) and international first-class or air mail postage for the Palmer Station address.

  • Non-U.S. correspondents use international first-class or air-mail postage.

  • Please note that no special attention / cachets will be added at McMurdo Station unless covers are forwarded directly to Scott Smith at Antarctic Support Associates in Denver, CO prior to his departure for the Ice. All covers requesting this special attention need to be in Scott's possession no later than September 30. He will personally attend to the addition of McMurdo cachets and cancellations upon arrival at McMurdo before assignment to the South Pole Station. Please send requests to: Scott Smith, ASA, P.O. Box 24833, Denver, CO 80224 USA.

  • Please note that Palmer Station cancellations are very difficult to predict. The United States does not maintain a post office at this base. Antarctic Support Associates utilizes a company agent in Punta Arenas, Chile where inter-company mail arrives and is then dispatched aboard the Gould or Palmer supply ships to Antarctica. Collector requests are accomplished by utilizing the Chilean mail system, which can be very unreliable at best. If one wishes to try the system, you must send your cancellation request to the address below, enclosing a self-addressed stamped envelope with Chilean postage.

  • Special Milennium Covers, with duel-cancellations 31 DE 99 / 01 JA 00, are being prepared by the Philatelic Mail Clerk for the South Pole Station. Additionally, special postcards and 70th Anniversary of Byrd's South Pole Flight will be available at a nominal price to collectors. Philatelists wishing to receive any of these special postal history items should click any of the links above.
