The first Zoos
Some
of the rich people who kept wild animals opened zoos, which
were places where ordinary people could pay money to come
and look at the animals. The
enclosures for the animals were designed to keep people safe
from the animals, and to be able to see them. Nobody
thought of making their environment like the real
environment they came from in the wild.
Thousands of birds and animals were collected from far away
countries, and put in boxes to send back to Europe and other parts of
the world. If the animals survived the journey, they would be put in
zoos for the rest of their lives.
Mostly, these
animals could not breed in captivity, because they were not happy or
healthy enough, and so a constant stream of replacement animals were
necessary.
