Early cages and enclosures
The
zoos often had a lot of money spent on making wonderful
buildings, that were very beautiful, to keep the animals in
their cages. People
would walk through this lovely building, with hanging plants
and stone pillars, and sit on the comfortable seats, to see
the lions in their cages. The
environment was designed to please the people, not the
animals. Even
in the 1950s, when there was more attempt to give animals
things to climb on (like this lynx has here), the cage
doesn't look much like the real environment. Again,
the main idea was to make it so people could see the animal
easily and safely.
