Race 2 - Sunday, February 16.

. . . . .. .. . . . . .

Race 2 - and the conditions were very different.

It was a very hot day, and there was hardly any wind at all. The sea was flat and calm. Many boats went out with Team New Zealand, to cheer them on after their terrible time in Race 1.

Only the main race yacht went out, because the second boat is still being fixed after the damage it received on Saturday when it was so windy.

It took a long time before there was enough wind to sail, and even then the race did not start because the organisers had to move the spectator boats out of the way.

There were so many boats on the course that they would have got in the way of the racing. Finally, the race started at ten to four in the afternoon.

Alinghi led around the first mark, but then Team NZ overtook them, and they continued to stay in the lead round the second, third, fourth and fifth marks.

The boats were very very close, and they seem to have about the same boat speed as each other. The wind stayed light, and sometimes it shifted to help one team more than another.

Round the last mark (the fifth), Team New Zealand was 80metres in front of Alinghi. During this last leg, they overtook Team New Zealand, and crossed the finish line only seven seconds ahead of the New Zealand boat.

That means the score is 2 - 0 to Alinghi. Everyone on the New Zealand boat was terribly disappointed.
