Ross Dependency

FIRST TRANS-ANTARCTIC CROSSING 1957-58
Signed by the parties that crossed the Antarctic continent at the South Pole Station, including
now "Sir Fuchs". One cover was made and given to each that wintered over and assisted at the
South Pole. Some of the signers later climbed Mt. Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary. A total of
18 covers were prepared.
In 1923 Great Britain established the Ross Sea Dependency. It claimed that territory, in
addition to the Falkland Islands Dependencies, and levied taxes on whaling companies operating
in those areas. Shortly thereafter the jurisdiction of the Ross Dependency was given to New
Zealand. Issues under the country status of Ross Dependency only number only a few; New
Zealand occasionally issues stamps specifically inscribed "Ross Dependency". For a link to
