William Taylor was born in Lower Hutt in 1938, and has written more than fifteen books for children and young adults, including Possum Perkins, which has now been published in five languages.
His other famous works are Knitwits and Agnes the Sheep, which were both Booklist Editor's Choice titles. Knitwits was selected for the New York Public Library's 1992 "Children's Books: One Hundred Titles for Reading and Sharing". Agnes the Sheep won the New Zealand Library Association's Esther Glen Medal in 1991.
He has also published Numbskulls (sequel to Knitwits and shortlisted for the 1996 AIM Children's Book Awards, junior fiction section), Hark (sequel to Numbskulls), Beth & Bruno, The Blue Lawn, Annie & Co and Marilyn Monroe (shortlisted for the 1996 AIM Children's Book Awards, senior fiction section). His most recent novels are Circles and Jerome.
He used to be a teacher and then a primary school principal at Ohakune School, but in 1985 William Taylor began to write full time. In his spare time he enjoys reading, music, gardening, and other outdoor activities. He lives in Raurimu, near Mt. Ruapehu, in the Central North Island of New Zealand.
