Kojimachi
Middle School has about 30 different clubs devoted to physical and cultural
activities. Every student belongs to at least one club. Sports clubs include
those for basketball, tennis, badminton, track and field, and soccer;
culturally oriented clubs focus on subjects like music, science, math,
the tea ceremony, theater, fine arts, haiku, and classical performing
arts.
Because of the
small schoolyard, sports clubs have limited practice time; they practice
after school two or three times a week. Sometimes the clubs compete
in regional meets with teams from other schools. As the day of a meet
approaches, some clubs also hold practices in the morning, before classes
begin. The girls' tennis team and the boys' badminton team are fairly
strong.
The
culturally oriented clubs share the fruits of their labors by holding
recitals, exhibits, and performances at the school. The tea ceremony
club has a long history, and its members study with a professional instructor
who comes to teach at the school. The haiku club has set up a Website
where its members post their poems.
