A tornado is a special kind of wind. The wind comes out of a big storm cloud, and goes round and round very fast.

It makes a funnel that sometimes comes down to touch the ground.

When it touches the ground it sucks everything up into the air. Tornadoes don't happen very often in New Zealand. When they do, they cause a lot of damage.

A tornado over water is called a water spout.
