In a thunderstorm, first you see the lightning flash in the sky.

Then later, you hear the thunder, because light gets to your eyes faster than sound gets to your ears.

If you count slowly "one - and - two - and - ..." you can see how far away the lightning is.

If there is a big gap between the flash and the thunder, it is a long way away.
