La Niña happens when ocean waters off Peru and Ecuador become colder than usual. La Niña means "the little girl." La Niña and El Niño cause changes to the weather all over the world. Scientists are not really sure of quite how this works, but they warn countries when the world is about to have an El Niño or La Niña cycle.
