What happens to NZ?

As you can see, an El Nino event can have a big effect on everyone's weather.

You must remember though, that all it does is make certain events MORE LIKELY. If it says a particular area is more likely to have floods, it may not rain any more than usual. But it is MORE LIKELY to rain more, and for that rain to be heavy enough to cause floods.

If an area is likely to have droughts, it is important to remember to conserve water, because there may be far less rainfall than usual.

In normal seasons between El Nino events, easterly and northeasterly winds predominate in New Zealand, bringing rain to the north and east of the country, and drier conditions to the west and south.

During El Nino events, drought is common in the north and east of the country, while the south and west are likely to experience heavy summer rain.
