A tiny eruption in Rotorua

One Friday afternoon, a muddy hot pool about 3m diameter burst into eruption. It was the largest hydrothermal eruption in Kuirau Park, Rotorua, since 1966.

It threw rocks and mud 100 metres up in the air and dropped a thick carpet of blocks and mud to the east, extending over 120m from the vent.

Blocks up to about 1m diameter were thrown over 50m from vent, while blocks around 10cm or less diameter landed over 100m away. The crater formed was about 10-12m in diameter.

This is the damage to the plants that were growing in the area. You can see that most of them will not survive.
