Jasper is an opaque
variety of quartz. The stone takes a high polish and is used
as a gemstone. It comes in various colors, including red,
green, yellow, and blue. When the colors are in bands, the
mineral is called riband jasper; and a variety containing
bands of red and green is called Siberian jasper. Mottled
yellow or brown varieties are called Egyptian
jasper. Little flecks of red jasper appear in
bloodstone.
