Carnelian is a translucent
form of chalcedony, which is a kind of quartz. It ranges in
color from yellow to deep red. The finest specimens come from
Brazil, India, and Arabia. It can also be found in many
countries, including New Zealand. Many of the stones used in
jewelry, like those to the right, have been treated to make
the colour darker. In the olden days, people used to
consider the blood-red forms of carnelian to be very
valuable.
