Airports use x-ray machines to look right inside your luggage without opening it. The x-rays pass through the soft things, and bounce back when they hit hard metal objects.

While objects are being passed through the scanning machine, people watch the screen to see what comes up. If they see something suspicious, they will open up the bag to check.
