Railway tracks

Before anyone could get on a train to go anywhere, the actual railway had to be built.

First of all the land had to be cleared of trees or whatever, and a wide flat area laid with small stones. Then the wood was laid down and the metal rails on top.

It used to take huge teams of men months and months to build sections of railway so that people and goods could be transported over them.

Railway tracks sometimes had to curve around the sides of hills, because it was too steep to go up and over the top.

And often, they had to build tunnels through the hills, so that the train could go underneath.
