Safety on railway tracks

It is very dangerous to walk on railway tracks, because trains are so fast, and you don't always hear them coming.

This man is walking along them because it is his job to make sure that the rails are in good order, and the train will be safe to travel along the line.

Railway Safety Rules for Kids

• Don't walk across the tracks. Trying to beat a train is just not smart.  If you lose, you'll be losing more than just a race, you'll lose your life.

• Loud music and headphones can keep you from hearing a train.

• Even if the train driver sees you and slams on the brakes, it takes a very long time before the train can come to a stop, because it is so heavy.

• If you play, walk or ride near railroad tracks, you can be injured by flying debris.

• No matter if you are in a vehicle, on a bicycle, or on foot, you are required to obey all traffic laws.

• Going around lowered gates is illegal and dangerous.

• Trains always have the right-of-way.
