Hundreds of years ago, when people wanted to go from one place to another, they had to go by stage coach (unless they had a coach and horses of their own, or they could ride). These coaches were rather like buses. Lots of people could fit on (well, not as many as on a bus, but a dozen or so), and you paid a fare for your ticket. You often had to go to an inn (or hotel) to catch the stage coach. As you can see, some people sat up on top, as well as others sitting inside. |
In early America and New Zealand, they had stage coaches that travelled on the rough roads. In New Zealand it was often muddy, and the wheels would get stuck. Everyone had to get off to help push! |
You needed quite a few horses to pull a heavy stage coach and all the passengers. The horses pulled in teams, and they would be changed over for another team at some of the stops, so the coach could keep going even after the horses were too tired to keep going. |
