More history of bicycles

Because people had problems falling off the bikes with two wheels, someone invented the tricycle, which had three wheels. That was far more steady.

One of the most important developments was the use of gears, which meant that you could make the pedals go round once, and the front wheel would go round twice or even more.

Before that, you could only make the bike go slowly.

The next thing that gave you a more comfortable ride was the invention of the pneumatic tyre (a rubber tyre filled with air).

Before that, it was rather a bumpy ride!

On the minus side, now bike riders had to deal with punctures.
