Wearing helmets

When people first started riding bikes, they did not wear helmets. They often wore hats outside (like these children), but that didn't help much when you fell off and hit your head!

But these bikes didn't go very fast, and there wasn't a lot of fast traffic on the roads. (Just horses and carriages).

Now most countries have rules to say that you have to wear a helmet when you ride a bike on the road.

This is to stop people being killed or damaging their brains when they have a bad accident.

If you race, like this boy, you have to wear a stronger helmet. You can see this one has a mouth and face guard as well, to protect him if he falls on his face.

You are not allowed to race unless you have a helmet.
