Howard Carter with a mummy
|
....who was Carter? Howard Carter was born in London on May 9, 1874. He was good at art, and went to Egypt when he was still only seventeen. He worked in Egypt for the rest of his life, looking for important Egyptian remains. The Earl of Carnarvon visited Egypt and paid for some archaeological work, starting in 1905. It took until 1922 to find the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings. Carter, accompanied by Lord Carnarvon, his daughter Lady Evelyn, Arthur Callender and Egyptian reises (foremen), went in the tomb first. The work of recording everything there, and taking it out, took until 1929. Howard Carter died on March 2, 1939, in London. |
