The torch relay in New Zealand

This is the first time the Olympic flame has ever been in New Zealand.

The flame lands at Coronet Peak, Queenstown, on June 5, 2000 after traveling through 12 Oceania countries from its source at Olympia, Greece.

Up to 300 torchbearers will carry the Olympic Flame through Queenstown, Christchurch,Wellington, Rotorua and Auckland on its historic three day journey.

It then heads for Australia on its final leg to the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

In Queenstown, on June 5, the first runner will be Garrick Tremaine, a painter.

In Christchurch, the same day, Anna Lawrence the outstanding hockey player, will be the first runner.

On June 6, in Wellington, the first runner will be Des Britten, a well known chef who spends a lot of time helping poor people at the city Mission.

Rotorua's first runner is the young athlete Sarah Philips.

On the same day, June 7, Beatrice Faumuina the discus medal winner, will start the relay in Auckland. From here, the flame will then be flown to Australia to start the long relay around the whole country.
