Calendar of Events 2003
HOME
These are the main events leading up to the deciding of who wins the America's Cup, the oldest trophy in sailing, for 2003, and the hosting rights for the next competition in 2006. Already over the final months of 2002, the challengers for the Louis Vuitton have been racing to decide on the one team that will challenge Team New Zealand for the cup. One by one they have been knocked out of the competition until only two remain. Now, in 2003, Oracle from the United States, and Alinghi from Switzerland, are the last two boats left in the competition. Only one of them can be the winner! The interesting thing is that all of the last three boats remaining are skippered by New Zealand sailors. Alinghi is skippered by Russell Coutts (who won the Cup for New Zealand last time), Oracle is skippered by Chris Dixon (another very well known NZ sailor), and of course Team New Zealand by Dean Barker. So whichever boat ends up taking home the America's Cup, it will have been skippered by a New Zealand sailor. Pretty amazing for such a small country! |
