When the sun shines there are always shadows. People used to use these to tell the time.

 

When it is night time the earth is turned away from the sun, and it is in shadow.

The world turns around once a day and goes round the sun once a year.

You can do an experiment in class to show how this happens using a globe and a bright light for the sun. You can use a tennis ball as the moon.
