Inside a modern space station, the
atmosphere is controlled, so astronauts do not need to wear
space suits. Instead they wear normal comfortable
clothing.
Before a mission, crewmembers are
given a selection of clothing including flight suits,
trousers, lined zipper jackets, knit shirts, sleep shorts,
soft slippers, and underwear.
All of the clothing is flame
retardant, which means that it does not burn easily. (Fire
is a huge danger in space flight because it is so difficult
to put out).
All the outer clothes have closable
pockets for storing such items as pens, pencils, data books,
sunglasses, a multipurpose Swiss army pocketknife, and
scissors. Open pockets would not be much use!
