The creator of How Stuff Works is Marshall Brain. Marshall is the author of ten books (including his most popular - The Teenager's Guide to the Real World), and is nationally recognized for his ability to communicate complex ideas clearly. Mr. Brain formerly taught in the Computer Science Department at North Carolina State University, where he was elected to the prestigious Academy of Outstanding Teachers for his work in the classroom.
About How Stuff Works, Marshall says:
I started How Stuff Works as one article that I wrote for a young friend of mine. I really enjoyed that experience, so I wrote others as time allowed. As the site grew in popularity, I made a commitment to add one article every week, and that activity became a very pleasant part of my weekend routine. Now as we begin adding new authors to the staff of How Stuff Works, it allows the library of articles here to grow even faster! With any luck we will one day be able to keep up with the huge appetite that How Stuff Works readers have for information!
One of the most gratifying things about HSW has been the appreciation of the millions of people who come here for the sheer joy of learning. I also know that many teenagers and college students have gotten their first real exposure to topics like computer programming, Boolean logic and web site creation here at HSW, and I have really enjoyed the enthusiastic and grateful email they send.
I hope that How Stuff Works helps people to understand the things they see around them every day, because many of them are quite amazing! I know I learn something new with every article I write, and that feels great!"
Marshall lives with his wife Leigh Ann, son David and daughter Irena in Raleigh, NC.
