The 2005 Bali bombings were a series of explosions that occurred on October 1, 2005, in roughly the same area of Bali as 3 years ago. Bombs exploded at two sites in Jimbaran and Kuta, both in south Bali. Twenty-three people were killed, including three bombers. |
This time the bombers walked into places where people were eating their dinner, and exploded the bombs carried in their backpacks. They died themselves, and also killed and injured people around them. The bombs were full of shrapnel - so they were designed to send sharp bits of metal flying around to injure as many people as possible. |

There were not as many people killed this time - and many of them were local people who lived and worked in that area. About 20 people were killed, but over a hundred were injured. Many people were injured by broken glass, and most of the foreign nationals were flown out to Australia and Singapore for treatment, rather than staying in Balinese hospitals. |
Once again, it is thought that the bombing was carried out by members of Jemaah Islamiah, the terrorist group. The heads and legs of the three suicide bombers were found afterwards, but there was no middle part to their body, because it was exploded by the bomb. This is how the police know who the people were who carried out the bombing. They are still chasing the people who helped them, however. |

Tourists had just started coming back to Bali, after being too scared to go there since the 2002 bombings. Indonesian authorities were expecting some sort of terrorist attack, but they did not know exactly what would happen, or where it would happen. No-one knew enough to stop the attack happening. After the attack, most of the tourists in Bali left very quickly because they did not feel safe. But all over the world, people are starting to say that if they let the terrorists make them so scared, that they won't go anywhere, the terrorists will have won. There is even a website (www.werenotafraid.com) where people send photos saying that they aren't afraid of terrorists, and they aren't going to let them win by spreading terror, which is their real weapon. This site was started after the bombings in the middle of 2005, in the London subway and on a London bus. Here are some of the images sent in by people all over the world, to that site. What do you think terrorists are trying to do? Would you travel to places like Bali? What will happen to Bali if no tourists go back there any more? |
