Scutellosaurus (skew-TEEL-oh-sawr-us)

The name Scutellosaurus means "little shield lizard" which refers to its lizard like appearance and the many small bony plates, that covered this dinosaur. Scutellosaurus was able to protect itself in two ways. It was fairly fast and it was covered with bony plates. This plant-eating dinosaur grew to be fifty-three inches long. It was also bipedal and one of the earliest known ornithischians. Scutellosaurus lived during the late Jurassic time period and was found in Western North America.
