Deinonychus was a carnivorous (meat-eating) dinosaur from the Lower Cretaceous of Montana and Wyoming. Like other dromaeosaurids, such as Velociraptor, it was equipped with a huge sharp claw on the second toe of each hind foot that was used for tearing prey. In fact, the name Deinonychus means "terrible claw"! Scientists think this dinosaur was very agile and hunted in packs. It could grow to a length of 10-11 feet (3-3.3 meters), a height of 6 feet (1.8 meters), and could weigh 150 pounds (68.0 kilograms).
