The rock is in limestone, which is a rock people use for building. The rock is in strata (in layers).

In the photo to the right, you can see the different layers of rock in the quarry wall.

The dinosaur footprints were in one layer, so the scientists had to carefully take off all the rock in the layers above, to expose them.
