One day, 67 million years ago, Sue died .....
....her bones were covered with sand and mud.....
.......which eventually hardened into rock (also called "matrix"). What remained -- bones in the case of a vertebrate (backboned) animal such as Sue -- is preserved.
Pressure turned Sue's bones into fossils. Over time, the rock wore away, allowing Sue to be discovered.
