The 'DV' digital video format increases contrast. To get good results, avoid white or black clothes or backgrounds. It's also a good idea to avoid stripes, and very strong colours (particularly red).

Bright sunlight, or light from a small bulb, makes harsh shadows. You can use a sheet of white card or expanded polystyrene to fill in the shadows.
