The legend of Papatoetoe
Papatoetoe is named after the toitoi. Did you know that was our school emblem, too? Before the land in Papatoetoe was cut up for farms and houses,a lot of the land was swampy, and there were lots of toitoi growing in the area. |
Papatoetoe is one of the oldest parts of Manukau. It used to be called Paptoitoi sometimes, and you can see that name on one of the gravestones in the St John's graveyard behind the church.
Papa means flat ground, and toitoi refers to the plant. |
