Companion dogs are dogs of many different breeds, and sometimes plain mongrels! But they all help their human owners in some way. Usually they will wear some kind of coat to show that they are not an ordinary pet, and that they have a job of work to do. If you see such a dog, you should not distract it from what it is doing. |

Hearing dogs are usually strays from rescue centres. They alert deaf people to noise by tapping their knee with a paw and leading them to it. They are often trained to the needs of their specific owner e.g. to respond to baby crying. Companion dogs may help their owners in many ways. This dog is helping its owner in a shop by handing him what he wants, because the man cannot do it for himself. Often these dogs are a help in social ways too, because people will stop to talk to, and admire the dog, whereas they might just walk past the person in a wheelchair. |
 
 This dog is called Endal. It was awarded a prize as the Dog of the Millenium for the help it gives to its master.  Here you can see Endal helping with the shopping. He is a very friendly dog, and enjoys meeting other people too! |

This dog has an owner with cerebral palsy. She could hardly talk before she got the dog, but she has learned to give it commands, and now it has helped her to communicate with other people, and not be as lonely. |
