If you have got a lot of money, you can have a really different and unusual pet.

Noone else will have one like this, and people will envy you, and think you are clever to have such an unusual animal of your own.

These animals are rare, and there are hardly any of them left in their natural environment, so it is hard to get hold of one. You have to buy them from someone who smuggles them out of the country they came from.

This komodo dragon on the left would cost sixtyfive thousand dollars to buy, but then you can show it off to your friends, and they will be very impressed!

Sometimes you don't want the live animal, you only want part of it - like beautiful carvings of ivory from elephant tusks, or special medicine to make you strong from powdered rhino horn. So if you can pay for it, why shouldn't you be able to buy it?

And the people in poor countries can earn money from killing, trapping and selling these animals too.
