The Kereru is the native wood pigeon. It is a big heavy bird, and the Maori used to eat it. The number of these birds is getting less each year, and some people break the law and hunt it. The wings of the Kereru make a heavy beating sound as it flies overhead. It often sits in Puriri trees, eating the berries.
