These noisy birds are related to the kea, and have orange feathers under their wings, which you can see when they fly overhead. They are reasonably common in both the north and south island, but their numbers are dropping in the north. They need big areas of forest to survive. They use their feet to hold food, and to hang from branches. Stoats, rats and possums eat both the young chicks and the eggs, making it hard for parents to rear baby birds.
