Before Miss Tatana gets her kitten, she needs to prepare. She will need to buy things like a cat basket for it to sleep in, and get some towels and blankets ready for the bed. She will need toys for it to play with, and things for it to scratch, like a scratching post. She will also need to buy food, remembering that kittens need different food from grown-up cats, because they are still growing. The kitten on the right is only 4hours old, and has not opened its eyes yet. This kitten is far too young to leave its mother yet - and it will be weeks before it is ready to go to a new home, and live without mum. By the time Miss Tatana gets her kitten, it will be old enough to drink from a dish, and to eat solid food. But it will still miss its mum and brothers and sisters for a while, until it gets used to living with Miss Tatana.

Miss Tatana will need to buy a fine-toothed comb and a rubber-backed brush for grooming her cat. A nail clipper designed for cats is also a good idea. If she starts clipping her kitten's nails early, it will make the task much easier when she is grown.

She will also need to buy a litter box, and litter to go in it. A tiny kitten can be trained to use this to go to the toilet, and it is much safer doing this than letting it outside. Last of all, Miss Tatana will have to check there are no poisonous plants in her garden, no dangling cords or precious ornaments sitting where they can be knocked over, and that the kitten cannot escape and run on to the road.
