The rule of thirds says that you shouldn't put things dead in the middle of your photo, or divide the photo in half. Instead, lines like the horizon should be one third up, or one third down. Look at how the sky is just at the top of this photo - not halfway down.

3. Faces - they follow the rule too
The most important thing you look at in a face is the eyes. So when you photograph someone's face (not their whole body) you should make sure one of the lines goes through their eyes. And it isn't very likely that it will be the bottom line! Where would the lines of thirds go in this photo?
Once again, the photo is balanced because the rule of thirds is followed.
